Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel? We’ll replace it.

Some older panel brands have a reputation for breakers that may not trip when they should. Many insurers now ask for them to be replaced, whatever their age. We swap them for a modern breaker panel and handle the paperwork.

Why insurers flag them

Insurers flag these brands because of concerns about how reliably their breakers trip under overload.

Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok

Very common in Canadian homes from roughly the 1950s to the 1980s, and one of the panels insurers ask about most.

Zinsco and similar

Older panels with known breaker and bus connection concerns are often treated the same way.

Hard to get parts

Replacement breakers for older panels can be hard to find, which makes adding circuits or repairs difficult.

Stab-Lok & Zinsco FAQ

The label inside the panel door usually says Federal Pioneer or Stab-Lok. If you’re not sure, take a photo of the panel with the door open and send it to us.

Many of these panels are still working, but insurers flag them because breakers may not trip reliably. If you notice heat, burning smells or scorching, turn off the main if it’s safe and call us.

For a flagged panel brand, insurers usually want the whole panel replaced, not individual breakers.

Often, yes. If you’re replacing the panel anyway, it can make sense to go to 200A at the same time. We’ll tell you whether you need it.
